Sandows Reclining chair N°114: a manifesto of French modernism
Some creations go beyond their function to make history. Designed in 1927 by René Herbst, two years before the famous LC4 by Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret and Charlotte Perriand, the Sandows N°114 Reclining chair is one of the first great French modernist chairs. Reissued today by Petite Friture, this historic piece retains intact the visionary force that profoundly transformed the way modern living was conceived.
A revolution in modern comfort
At the end of the 1920s, furniture was still largely dominated by decorative codes inherited from the 19th century. Convinced that design had to keep pace with the industrial changes of the time, René Herbst turned to the materials used in automobiles, aeronautics and modern architecture. His ambition was light: to replace the heavy bourgeois Sofa with lighter, more hygienic furniture more suited to contemporary life.
His intuition was revolutionary. It combines a chromed tubular steel structure with textile-covered elastic webbing that naturally follows the body's movements. Developed as early as 1927, this innovation gave rise to one of the first truly modern Reclining chairs in furniture history. The mattress and headrest in Black Leather now enhance this timelessly elegant re-edition.
René Herbst, the Man of Steel
Born in 1891, René Herbst is considered one of the great pioneers of French industrial design. Co-founder of the Union des Artistes Modernes alongside Charlotte Perriand, Jean Prouvé and Robert Mallet-Stevens, he championed functional, accessible and forward-looking furniture.
Nicknamed the "Man of Steel", he was one of the first French designers to explore the possibilities of metal tubing in furniture. The Sandows collection remains his most famous work, and one of the most accomplished expressions of his philosophy. This Reclining chair is without doubt his most spectacular manifesto, combining technical innovation, purity of line and the quest for absolute comfort.
A museum piece designed to be lived in
Today, the Sandows N°114 Reclining chair is recognized as one of the founding pieces of 20th-century design, and is part of the permanent collections of MoMA in New York, the Centre Pompidou and the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. Its historical importance goes far beyond the Frame.
Yet its strength also lies in its incredible modernity. Its nine-position reclining backrest can be used for reading as well as for relaxation. The tensioners offer remarkable flexibility, while the generous dimensions invite you to relax. In a contemporary living room, a Bookcase or a modernist-inspired interior, its airy silhouette asserts its presence without ever weighing down the space.
Made in Italy and featuring a René Herbst signature plate, this re-edition is much more than just a designer Reclining chair. It offers the chance to live day-to-day with a work that helped write the history of modern design. A manifesto of French modernism whose radicalism remains astonishingly relevant almost a century after its creation.
