Sandows Chair N°212: a modernist design legend
Much more than a chair, Sandows N°212 is a manifesto. Designed in 1927 by René Herbst, a major figure in the French modern movement, it embodies one of the founding moments in the history of design. Reissued by Petite Friture, this emblematic piece retains all its radicalism and modernity almost a century after its creation.
An aesthetic revolution that became iconic
At the end of the 1920s, when the decorative arts were still focusing on ornamentation, René Herbst broke new ground. Inspired by the automotive and aeronautical industries, he adoptedChromed tubular steel as the material of the future. The Sandows chair combines this minimalist structure with textile-covered elastic webbing, inspired by aviation equipment. Its extremely pure design heralds the great icons of international modernism. Its historical importance is such that it now features in the permanent collections of MoMA in New York, the Centre Pompidou and the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris.
Comfort as innovation
Beneath its apparent graphic rigor lies a real feat of practicality. Elastic webbing naturally follows the body's movements, offering surprisingly contemporary comfort. Visually light, the design chair retains a strong presence around a dining table, in a Desk or in a demandinginterior architecture project.
René Herbst, pioneer of industrial design
An architect and decorator born in 1891, René Herbst was one of the founders of the Union des Artistes Modernes, alongside Charlotte Perriand, Robert Mallet-Stevens and Jean Prouvé. Nicknamed the "Man of Steel", he advocated modern, functional and accessible furniture, designed to keep pace with the evolution of modern society. The Sandows collection is the most famous expression of this avant-garde vision.
Made in Italy, this re-edition features the designer's signature plate. More than just a seat, Sandows N°212 is a piece of French design history to be experienced every day. A museum piece that has become an object of use, able to withstand the decades without losing an ounce of its strength.
