Rosie Wall Light by Serax: Light as a Wall Sculpture
Somewhere between a wall light and a wall sculpture, the Rosie wall light by Serax transforms light into matter. Designed by Marie Michielssen, it features a deliberately raw aesthetic, composed of irregular shapes, recesses, and raised surfaces that come to life as soon as the bulb is turned on. Its mat white sandstone reinforces this impression of a sculpted object and gives every detail an almost tactile depth. The collection comes in two sizes: Rosie 01, measuring 19 x 30 cm, and Rosie 02, measuring 21 x 20 cm.
Free-form geometry, somewhere between a mask and architecture
Rosie 01 features a vertical silhouette that evokes an abstract face or a totemic mask. Its slightly offset blocks form a relief-like facade, pierced by narrow openings through which light filters. Rosie 02 features a more compact, grid-like shape, with a succession of volumes that creates an almost architectural rhythm.
In both cases, Marie Michielssen avoids geometric perfection. The slightly irregular contours, sculpted surfaces, and asymmetry give the wall light that artisanal quality that characterizes the Rosie universe. When unlit, the wall light retains all its decorative impact. When lit, the gaps become lines of light and cast particularly graphic shadows on the wall.
A light that reveals both the wall and the object
The light source is largely concealed behind the sandstone forms. Light escapes through the openings, but also from above, on the sides, and around the wall light. It thus produces a soft halo that highlights the contours rather than providing powerful direct lighting. This design gives Rosie a striking presence while maintaining a warm atmosphere.
Where should you install a Rosie wall light?
Rosie naturally fits in wherever you’re looking for ambient lighting and a striking decorative element. It can accent a hallway, adorn an entryway wall, complement a sofa in the living room, or create soft lighting in a bedroom. Its mat white finish allows it to be paired just as easily with light-colored walls—for an almost monochromatic effect—as with a bold hue that will highlight its texture.
Rosie 01 or Rosie 02: Which model should you choose?
Rosie 01 is particularly well-suited for narrow walls or arrangements that call for a vertical presence. At 30 cm tall, its slender silhouette accentuates the effect of a sculptural mask. Rosie 02, wider and shorter at 21 x 20 cm, creates a more compact arrangement. It fits easily in a series or on a wall where you want to emphasize a horizontal rhythm.
Can the Rosie wall light provide the main lighting for a room?
Rosie is primarily designed to create ambient lighting. Its LED bulb E27 is limited to 5 W, and the light is largely indirect, filtered by the fixture’s contours. It is therefore particularly well-suited for accent or mood lighting, complementing a main light source. The wall light plugs directly into the wall and is not dimmable.
More than just a light source, the Rosie wall light creates a constant interplay of material, shadow, and light on the wall. An expressive piece that remains sculptural even when turned off and, come evening, reveals the full depth of its design.
