Silk Lantern Wall Light, a silk lantern hung on the wall
Designed in 1951 by Ejner Larsen and Aksel Bender Madsen, the Silk Lantern wall light belongs to a family of lighting fixtures that remained unreleased for over 70 years. Gubi is now bringing it into production for the first time. Its vertical silhouette combines a cylindrical lampshade made of natural silk with a slender black wall bracket. A creation at the crossroads of Japanese minimalism and Danish modernism, designed to bring both character and softness to the lighting.
When the Japanese lantern meets Danish design
With the Silk Lantern, Larsen and Bender Madsen translate the delicacy of Japanese lanterns into the rational vocabulary of 1950s Scandinavian design. The construction is almost immediately apparent. A black steel arm extends from the wall and holds the lampshade at a distance, giving the impression that the luminous cylinder is floating in space.
This economy of lines is characteristic of the two designers’ work. Their collaboration began in 1947 and would yield nearly 300 pieces of furniture. With the Silk Lantern, their exploration of materials and lightness takes on a particularly poetic dimension.
Silk Transforms the Light
The lampshade is the heart of the Silk Lantern. Crafted from natural beige silk, it is framed by walnut veneer rings. A slender antique brass suspension chain adds a delicate touch, while the semi-matte black steel wall mount creates a graphic contrast with the softness of the fabric.
Once lit, the silk filters the light source and diffuses it across the entire height of the lampshade. It thus creates a subtle gradation of light and shadow rather than direct illumination. The light fixture thus becomes a true luminous presence on the wall, warm and soft.
Where should you install the Silk Lantern wall light?
Measuring 50 cm in height, 13.5 cm in diameter, and 27.5 cm in depth, the Silk Lantern fits easily into a bedroom, living room, or hallway. Its narrow profile is particularly useful when you want to create vertical lighting without cluttering the space with extra furniture or lamps.
In a bedroom, two wall lights can frame the bed and free up space on the bedside tables. In a living room, a single wall light can accent a section of wall, complement an armchair, or highlight a low piece of furniture. When installed in a row along a hallway, several Silk Lanterns create a very graphic pattern of light.
Does the Silk Lantern wall light require a wall outlet?
No. This version comes with a cable and plug for connecting to a standard electrical outlet. It therefore does not necessarily require the wall outlet typically needed for a traditional wall light. A switch located directly on the cable allows for easy control of the lighting.
This feature makes it easy to integrate into an existing interior and allows you to enjoy the decorative effect of a wall light without the same electrical installation requirements.
What kind of light does the Silk Lantern wall light emit?
The Silk Lantern is designed to provide soft, ambient light rather than bright, directional lighting. Its natural silk lampshade envelops the light source and softens its direct glow, making it particularly well-suited for spaces where a warm, inviting atmosphere is desired.
It comes with a 6 W, 2700 K, opal E27 LED bulb. This color temperature corresponds to a warm white light, which is particularly pleasant in a bedroom or living room.
Both a wall light and a decorative element,Gubi’s Silk Lantern wall light lends light an almost textile-like quality. The slender black arm highlights the warmth of the walnut and the subtle sheen of the brass, while the silk glows like a hanging lantern. A design from 1951 that seems to have been waiting for its time.
