Description
Sutoa thumbs its nose at our traditional perception of the Chest of drawers...This visually arresting piece of sculptural furniture was imagined by Japanese architect Keiji Ashizawa. Sutoa is a nod to the layered sculptures of American artist Donald Judd (1928 - 1994). Mounted on Casters, this truncated-pyramid-shaped stack of drawers is imbued with tension and balance. Its sculptural geometric form disguises its function.
Sutoa consists of 7 stacked Oiled solid oak drawers, set in a minimalist steel structure. Each drawer differs from the others in size. The result is a pyramidal assembly, an asymmetrical structure both fascinating and unusual.
This highly decorative piece of furniture retains its original function as a chest of drawers. The drawers are easy to handle. To open them, simply slide your hand into the gap between the drawers. The two Casters at the back of the unit make it easy to move around. The top drawer is not closed: there is no tray above the unit. This piece takes its name from the Japanese word Sutoa: "to contain".
