Haugesen is best known for his X-Line stacking chair, which he designed in 1977. Named after its X-shaped load-bearing structure, this chair is part of the collection of the Museum of Furniture Studies in Stockholm and won an ID Design Award in 1987. Today, produced by Hay, it remains a great icon of design furniture.
Renowned for its uncluttered style and quest for functionality, Haugesen has combined technical innovation with timeless aesthetics in its famous X-Line collection. Combining Steel mesh with a very fine steel wire structure, the X-Line chair is part of a rigorous approach to design, blending simplicity and functionality.
The construction is based on a simple, logical design - where the X-shaped structure, both a visual signature and a functional asset, ensures robustness and stability. Steel wire gives the Chair a beautiful industrial look, making it suitable for use in many different spaces.
Steel mesh gives it an evanescent, almost transparent appearance. Perforated sheet steel offers a delicate, graphic openwork pattern. From a distance, it produces an astonishing optical effect, ethereal and vibratory.
The X-Line chair is characteristic of the high-tech trend of the 70s, which opposed the environmentally disastrous disposable culture by advocating timeless, sustainable design. It was a return to the strict, rational principles of early modernism, motivated in part by budget restrictions in the furniture industry. The movement leaned towards a functional aesthetic, a minimalist, even "skeletal" style, aimed at reducing materials while remaining easy to produce. Metal, and in particular Steel mesh, was used extensively to produce this streamlined, concise piece of furniture.
The timeless X-Line chair is equally at home in private and professional environments. It is also available in an outdoor version (with colored steel structure). Its stackable design, for up to 10 units, also makes it a practical solution for optimizing space.
For lovers of high-end design, acquiring a piece signed Haugesen is to treat yourself to a fragment of history and a touch of timeless elegance.
