Serax Cameo In&Out Vase: The Cameo Reimagined in Glass
With the Cameo In&Out collection, Maurice Harris has designed vases for Serax featuring a highly distinctive graphic style. The designer reinterprets the historical concept of the cameo—traditionally based on a profile portrait—to integrate it directly into the Vase’s form. Depending on the model, the face appears in relief or recessed. The name “In&Out” specifically refers to this interplay between positive and negative forms.
Available in two shapes and two colors—Amber and Pink—the collection allows for experimentation with volumes and color combinations while maintaining a shared visual identity.
A toy based on reliefs inspired by the cameo and the profile portrait
Maurice Harris draws on several sources of inspiration to create this collection. He incorporates the vocabulary of Western cameos while enriching it with motifs inspired by Kente textiles and his own silhouette. The face thus becomes an integral part of the design. It does not merely appear on the surface; it shapes the contours and reliefs of the Vase.
Crafted from mouth blown borosilicate glass, the Cameo In&Out vases feature silhouettes that vary greatly from one model to another. Some feature a flared opening and vertical reliefs. Others have a rounder shape, punctuated by horizontal bands. This sculptural design gives them a strong decorative presence, with or without a bouquet.
How to use a Cameo In&Out vase?
A Cameo In&Out vase can hold flowers, but it also works perfectly on its own as a decorative object. Its expressive design makes it ideal for display on a console, dresser, coffee table, or deep shelf. It can be used alone or paired with other pieces from the collection to create a more dynamic arrangement.
Which Cameo In&Out vase shape should you choose?
The choice depends mainly on the desired effect. The two shapes offer distinct volumes and contours. One features a more open, graphic silhouette, while the other has more rounded, enveloping curves. Combining them further highlights the contrast between their profiles and volumes.
Which color should you choose: Amber or Pink?
The Amber version offers a warm, deep tone that pairs particularly well with dark woods, natural materials, or earthy hues. The Rose version creates a softer, more luminous presence. Both colors can also be combined to accentuate the collection’s expressive character.
The Serax Cameo In&Out vase blurs the lines between decorative vessel and sculptural object. Blending the art of glassmaking, references to cameos, and Maurice Harris’s personal vision, each model asserts a unique presence and instantly adds depth to an interior.
