The Australian designer is a lover of life and Earth: his pieces are odes to nature. After smashing several records at auctions, Newson's work represents almost 25% of the entire contemporary design market. His work can be found in the permanent collections of many illustrious museums. Sleek and futuristic, Marc Newson's style is all curves and transparency, and the right angles are almost non-existent, just like in nature.
Marc Newson created the Felt Chair in 1989, made from lacquered fibreglass with an aluminium rear support. The ultra-glossy finish of the fibre gives it a look not dissimilar from a car's bodywork. Since his earliest days, Marc Newson's style can be identified by the boldness of his pure, taut and aerodynamic lines. Like in his previous creations - the "Lockheed Lounge" chaise longue (1986) or the "Embryo" armchair (1988) - Marc Newson takes up the idea of a flattened and elongated form, animated by a plan on curves which harmonise and respond to each other, like a type of echo. The organic lines evoke the shape of an hourglass, characteristic of the designer's work.The Felt Chair was designed while Marc Newson was also working on what would become the Orgone Chair, released in 1993. The Felt Chair is a hollow variation of the Orgone Chair, with a split depth and sides which extend down to the ground. The relative simplicity of the Felt Chair's design makes it a great candidate for production.The Felt Chair armchair can be used both indoors and outdoors.
