Hanging Lamp n°1 Wall light with plug grey metal / H 140 x L 175 cm

"Known as Muller Van Severen, the Flemish design duo Fien Muller and Hannes Van Severen work at the intersection of art and design. They are among the most prominent creators of the moment. From galleries to museums, not to mention collectors, design enthusiasts and design houses, everyone loves their minimalist, colourful furniture, timeless and joyful. Their success began with this collection of lamps. Hannes explains: "It all started out of necessity. We were working in our new house, which is old. There was no socket in the ceiling above the table to install a light source, so we designed a lamp that could be hung on the wall." The first prototypes were shown at Muller Van Severen's very first solo show in 2011. With their linear design, the Hanging Lamp wall lights look like coloured pencil lines drawn in the air: like designs materialised in space. The creative duo Muller Van Severen see colour as a material. Like all their furniture, Hanging Lamps combine rigorous, strict lines with bright, bold colours. These lamps draw a sober, colourful line in the decor. At the end of this line is a simple white glass lampshade that identically replicates a lampshade the designers initially unearthed in a flea market. “It’s a fantastic lampshade: perfectly neutral. Fortunately, we found a company capable of producing it”, Hannes adds. This large bracket wall light provides remote lighting and can replace the use of a pendant. It’s equipped with a cable that connects to the mains (switch on cable). Fien Muller and Hannes Van Severen, ex-sculptor and ex-photographer respectively, infuse each of their pieces with a touch of poetry. Hannes explains: “Design is linked to function. We come from the visual arts. So we’re just trying to create sculptural furniture to occupy space. Art or design, creation takes place the same way … and provides the same satisfaction. Poetry is possible even in the industrial”, concludes Fien. Belgian label Valérie Objects uses its uncompromising eye to find designers in line with its philosophy, namely: to create everyday objects likely to develop emotion and attachment, far from a stereotypical decoration that lacks depth. Veerle Wenes, gallery owner and co-founder of Valérie Objects: “Minimal objects require maximum work”.
