The Hanging Lamp No. 2 Mini by Muller Van Severen for valerie_objects condenses one of the famous Belgian duo’s seminal designs into a more compact format. Long before their now-iconic furniture, Fien Muller and Hannes Van Severen began their collaborative journey with these light fixtures, which were born out of a very practical need. In their former home, there was no electrical outlet available on the ceiling above the table. So they designed a lamp that could extend from the wall and direct light to the desired spot. The first prototypes were unveiled at their first solo exhibition in 2011.
Measuring 63.5 cm high and 49 cm wide, this Mini version reimagines that ingenious idea on a scale particularly well-suited for bedrooms or smaller spaces. It plugs directly into an outlet via its 200 cm Cable and therefore requires no ceiling outlet.
A design that comes to life on the wall
The Hanging Lamps resemble large lines drawn in space. Their steel structure traces a continuous line that extends away from the wall, curves, and then supports the light source. This apparent simplicity perfectly captures the world of Muller Van Severen, where geometry, color, and function come together without ever weighing down the form.
Le Duo, with backgrounds in the visual arts, conceives of their creations as sculptural forms. Fien Muller worked as a sculptor and Hannes Van Severen as a photographer before combining their practices to focus on furniture design. This artistic background explains the graphic power of the Hanging Lamp, which straddles the line between functional lighting and three-dimensional composition.
A lampshade inspired by a vintage find
At the end of this colorful cord sits a white glass lampshade with a deliberately simple design. Its origin is an integral part of the lamp’s story. Muller Van Severen discovered the original model at a flea market and appreciated its perfectly neutral white character. Le Duo then found a manufacturer capable of reproducing it to complement the collection.
This understated design allows the structure to retain its full presence. Depending on the version chosen—Black, Brass, Green, Ivory, or Red—these colors interact with the white glass and brass details to create an instantly recognizable graphic composition.
Where should you place the Hanging Lamp No. 2 Mini?
Its compact size makes it particularly well-suited for placement near a bed, where it can replace a bedside lamp while freeing up space on the bedside table.
