Vertical symphony... A must-have for all design connoisseurs, the Hill House1 chair was designed in 1902 by Charles Rennie Mackintosh, the most famous Scottish architect of the early 20th century. This iconic chair is a testament to Mackintosh's creative genius, famous for his complex challenges. Through his creations, Mackintosh advocated a return to medieval lines via the Gothic Revival style. He was a leading exponent of the Arts & Crafts style, the Anglo-Saxon equivalent of Art Nouveau.
This Chair with its undeniable scenic presence was designed to furnish the house of the same name: Hill House in Scotland, one of Mackintosh's major projects. More precisely, it was designed to take its place in the dining room. A striking detail: the room is painted white, to accentuate the Tainted black wood furniture. Mackintosh was the architect who laid the foundations for Art Nouveau. He believed that the building, interior Decoration and furniture should be in harmony. After building Hill House, he designed the interior architecture and furniture, including the famous Chair in 1902. The rectilinear, grid style is his trademark.
Its linear, geometric form evokes the minimalist lines and abstract graphics of Japanese design. Its avant-garde design is marked by a disproportionately high backrest made up of a succession of vertical lines ending in a grid pattern, some sections of which defy the laws of material strength.
For many, Hill House 1 is not just a chair, but an authentic treatise on articulation in space. Hill House 1 expresses a unique fusion of art and function, representing the Art Nouveau era.
The design company Cassina took over the Hill House 1 chair edition and marketed it from 1973, embellishing the seat with Dark green or Pale pink velvet. Cassina reissues the Hill House 1 chair thanks to the extraordinary mastery of Meda's cabinetmakers, offering it in a version in Tinted black ashwood with a velvet seat. Each Chair is crafted with meticulous attention to detail, perpetuating the heritage of exceptional craftsmanship. High-quality materials and meticulous construction make it a sought-after collector's item.
A symbol of Prestige... To own a Hill House 1 chair is to acquire much more than just a piece of furniture. It's an investment in a functional work of art, a collector's item that tells a story and embodies the very essence of modern design. The Hill House 1 Chair transcends time and trends. It's a legacy of Mackintosh's creative genius. Treat yourself to the privilege of having in your home a piece of design history, a chair that continues to captivate and inspire enthusiasts the world over.
The original Hill House 1 Chair by Cassina can be identified by checking three pieces of information that guarantee its authenticity: the author's signature in the form of a mark, the Cassina logo ''I Maestri'', the identification number, present on every piece produced.
