In 1951, Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru called on Le Corbusier to design the new capital of Punjab in northern India: Chandigarh. Le Corbusier chose his cousin, Swiss architect Pierre Jeanneret, to collaborate on the design of this "ideal city", an oasis of vegetation and Raw concrete, and the most ambitious project of their careers. In less than 10 years, a city was born, which today is the largest concentration of Le Corbusier and Jeanneret works on the planet.
In the early '50s, while the utopian city of Chandigarh was still under construction, Stone designed a complete line of furniture for the new city's administrative desks, bookcases and official residences.
With their clean lines, geometric pieces with modular assembly - facilitating the series production called for in the Exercise book - and distinctive design details such as their "V" shaped legs, these chairs, which have gone down in history as the "Chandigarh Chairs", represented an innovative and distinctive style, designed specifically for a young, modern city.
Produced by the thousands in the 1950s, the "Chandigarh Chairs" were long forgotten, roaming India's garbage dumps for decades until they were snapped up by the world! A few decades later, some of these Chandigarh Chairs found themselves far from their original home, in European and American galleries, auction houses and museums, where they fetched gold prices.
The Kangaroo Low armchair is part of the iconic Chandigarh chair collection. Its essential shapes and simple materials strike a balance between modern European ideals and traditional Indian spirit. This low seat, made for the city's general hospital, but also found in many private homes, is characterized by the "Z" shape of its sides. The sides are made up of a sequence of three loosely triangular coplanar elements, set in continuity. The seat and backrest are made of a typical mulch inside the Solid teak frame.
