La Uno Floor Lamp: From the Milan Metro to the Living Room
Designed by Piovenefabi, an architecture studio founded in 2012 by Ambra Fabi and Giovanni Piovene, the La Uno floor lamp originated from a project presented at the Chicago Architecture Biennial in 2017. Based between Milan and Brussels, the duo works at the intersection of architecture, urban research, and design. For this installation dedicated to the Milan Metro, Piovenefabi chose to reinterpret one of its most recognizable elements: the network’s famous handrail.
From this urban reference emerged a floor lamp with a radical, almost architectural silhouette. valerie_objects then transformed the gallery piece into a collection of light fixtures called Metro Lamps. Standing 167 cm tall, La Uno deliberately retains the tubular shape of the handrail and transposes it into the domestic space. Crafted from steel, it is available in Green, Red, White, or Yellow—colors that extend the connection to the Milan metro’s color palette.
A Metro Icon Transformed into a Light
The design of La Uno is based on a simple yet powerful idea: bringing a fragment of public architecture into the home. Piovenefabi preserves the functional and instantly recognizable character of the handrail to transform it into a light fixture. The long steel tube forms the base, the mounting, and the arm of the floor lamp, while the bulb at its tip punctuates this continuous line.
This transformation perfectly encapsulates the studio’s approach. Rather than erasing the object’s origins, Piovenefabi highlights them and gives them a new purpose. The result is as much a Lamp as it is a Sculpture, with a very strong graphic presence in the space.
Piovenefabi: Between Architecture and Design
Piovenefabi’s work has been featured in several international events, including the Chicago and Rotterdam Architecture Biennales and the Lisbon Architecture Triennale. The studio develops a practice that explores uses, the urban context, and the way objects fit into living spaces.
La Uno directly embodies this approach. Its form is not conceived as a standalone decorative object, but as the transposition of a familiar urban element into a new environment. It is precisely this shift that gives it its visual and conceptual power.
A Deliberately Radical Silhouette
The tubular structure of the La Uno floor lamp unfolds in a single, clear gesture. The base, the vertical mounting, and the light arm extend the same line, giving the fixture an almost sign-like silhouette. The light source at the end of the tube further reinforces this graphic interpretation.
Color plays a key role in the piece’s identity. The first model was designed in the iconic red of the Milan metro. Three other variations were later added to the collection, referencing the colors of the metro system. La Uno is thus available in Red, Green, White, and Yellow.
What kind of lighting does the La Uno floor lamp provide?
La Uno uses a maximum 4 W E27 bulb, which is included and replaceable. Its light is concentrated at the end of the horizontal arm. It therefore primarily creates a focused, decorative light source rather than general lighting intended to illuminate a large room on its own.
This localized light accentuates the lamp’s sculptural quality. Placed near an armchair, a sofa, or a bookcase, La Uno becomes both a source of light and a visual focal point in the space.
Where should you place the La Uno floor lamp?
Measuring L 99 x W 52 x H 167 cm, La Uno needs a bit of space around it to fully showcase its silhouette. It naturally fits into a living room, a reading nook, a spacious entryway, or a professional setting.
It is designed for indoor use in a dry environment. Its switch is located on the Cable for easy everyday use.
La Uno does more than just provide light. It tells a story of transformation—that of a detail from public architecture turned into a domestic object. A statement piece that brings a fragment of Milan’s urban landscape into the home.
