"The Little Petra armchair is a creation by Danish designer Viggo Boesen (1907 - 1985) who, in the 1930s, like Alvar Aalto and Arne Jacobsen, introduced the "Funkis style", or Scandinavian functionalism, which differed from German or French functionalism with its taste for curved lines and natural materials. Like a Finn Juhl, Viggo Boesen liked round, organic shapes, asserting himself as a radical counterpoint to cold stiffness and a little disembodied from the Bauhaus. Originally launched in 1938, the Little Petra chair proved immediately popular at the Copenhagen Cabinetmakers Guild Exhibition, going on to win numerous awards at exhibitions in New York and Berlin. A true precursor of what would later become Danish modernism, Little Petra is a gem that’s heading for a new future. Intended for a few private customers only, the Little Petra armchair was originally manufactured by one of the most renowned cabinetmakers of the time, A.J. Iversen, who was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Order of Dannebrog for his quality craftsmanship. Only about 30 pieces were made at the time. &tradition brings this precious piece back to life by re-releasing it. Close to the ground, open and enveloping, Little Petra is an extremely comfortable lounge chair that lets you sit in multiple positions. Named after Boesen's mother-in-law, Little Petra is surprisingly small, compact and expressive, allowing it to fit into any type of space. You can find Viggo Boesen's love for cabinetmaking and noble materials in his choice of a base in solid oiled walnut. Martin Kornbek Hansen, founder of &tradition, explains: "Little Petra is a real find from the archives of Danish design. Although not widely known to the general public, Boesen’s work contributed to Danish aesthetics in the 1930s. We are delighted to honour this original concept by adding a new page to the history books.‘’"
