Description
Designed by Antonio Aricò, the ''Magna Graecia'' collection of Terracotta objects revisits the Greek relics of southern Italy in a cartoonish style. Steeped in Mediterranean culture, Antonio Aricò worked all over the world before returning to Calabria, where he grew up. Greek culture is very much alive in this region, which abounds in statues and artefacts. In some villages, people still speak a derivative of Greek, more than 2500 years after the occupation...
With ''Magna Graecia'', Antonio Aricò interprets this Greek heritage using Terracotta, all in a playful, contemporary spirit. Magna Graecia" reflects an imaginary world that is more Mediterranean than Calabrian. It refers to the Magna Graecia of Antic times, but also to Roman emperors and Sicilian traditions such as the Testa di Moro.
To create the many pieces in this collection, the designer accumulated numerous drawings, which he transcribed into volume using 3D software. The features of these drawings were then identically replicated in Terracotta.
Antonio Aricò: "This is the first time in my career as a designer that the final pieces are exactly as I designed them. You can see the modernity but also the purity of traditional manufacturing. Above all, I didn't want to make replicas or souvenirs. These pieces are contemporary and designed with fun in mind, which is Seletti's spirit.
The pieces are adorned with familiar motifs of Doric and Ionic columns, wave patterns and erotic motifs such as those discovered as children on Antic vases. Among the highlights of the collection are numerous busts and statues sculpted in reference to Antic, inspired by the "Bronzes de Rioux".These are statues of warriors from the 5th century BC, still shrouded in mystery. The designer has imagined female figures: women and men are thus mixed, as in Greek culture, in a certain fluidity of gender.
Magna Graecia" tells an ancient story which, through Seletti, finds its own way into contemporary everyday life with irony and grace.
