Description
Designed by Antonio Aricò, the ''Magna Graecia'' collection of Terracotta objects revisits the Greek relics of southern Italy in a cartoonish style. Steeped in Mediterranean culture, Antonio Aricò worked all over the world before returning to Calabria, where he grew up. Greek culture is very much alive in this region, which abounds in statues and artefacts. In some villages, people still speak a derivative of Greek, more than 2500 years after the occupation...
With ''Magna Graecia'', Antonio Aricò interprets this Greek heritage using Terracotta, all in a playful, contemporary spirit. The pieces are adorned with familiar motifs of Doric and Ionic columns, wave patterns and erotic motifs such as those we discover as children on Antic vases. Among the highlights of the collection are numerous busts and statues sculpted in reference to Antic, inspired by the "Bronzes de Rioux".These are statues of warriors from the 5th century BC, still shrouded in mystery. The designer imagined feminine figures: men and women are thus mixed, as in Greek culture, in a certain fluidity of gender. ...
Regarding the choice of Terracotta, the designer explains: "I grew up in a carpentry workshop and I love wood, which is my favorite material. Terracotta is the same shade, but more expressive in its plasticity. I like the "Nude" aspect of this material, which gives purity but not white, which is warmer... ...
Magna Graecia" tells an ancient story which, through Seletti, finds its own way into contemporary daily life with irony and grace.
