Numbra TY1 &tradition Pendant Light: Light Between Shadow and Matter
With the Numbra TY1 pendant light, Teruhiro Yanagihara seeks to do more than simply illuminate an interior. He envisions a presence that transforms the perception of space. The Japanese designer’s first collaboration with &tradition, Numbra draws its identity from twilight and the way light meets matter. Its 122 cm linear silhouette combines the warmth of Oak with the precision of Aluminium to create a light fixture that is just as striking when lit as when unlit.
A Different Way of Looking at Light
The starting point for Numbra is one of almost radical simplicity: the straight line. The line that structures objects, shapes architecture, and organizes cities. Here, Teruhiro Yanagihara transforms it into a succession of wooden slats that filter the light and create areas of shadow.
This approach echoes Junichirô Tanizaki’s “In Praise of Shadows” and a Japanese sensibility in which lighting is not measured solely by its intensity. It is also the contrasts, shadows, and nuances that give a space its depth. The name Numbra, a contraction of “penumbra,” precisely captures this quest for light that is felt as much as it is seen.
Oak sets the rhythm of the light
The pendant lamp alternates between solid oak elements and pieces of moulded aluminium with barrel finishes, while an acrylic diffuser softens the light source. Inside, a stainless steel structure supports this 122-cm-long fixture.
The choice of wood plays an essential role. The oak elements are not merely decorative. They give rhythm to the silhouette and directly contribute to the interplay of light and shadow. The natural oak, protected by a transparent varnish and FSC-certified, also adds warmth that tempers the geometric precision of the design.
A light fixture conceived as an object
Teruhiro Yanagihara compares Numbra to a Vase that retains its beauty even when it contains no flowers. The pendant follows the same logic. When turned off, it remains a fully-fledged architectural element. When turned on, its series of lines reveals itself in a different way and subtly alters the atmosphere around it.
This duality makes it a particularly interesting piece in interiors where the light fixture plays a full role in the decorative composition. Numbra TY1 creates a dialogue between Japanese minimalism and Scandinavian warmth, without seeking to create a spectacular effect.
Where should you install a 122-cm linear pendant light?
Numbra TY1 is particularly well-suited for installation above a dining table, Counter, or kitchen island when hung horizontally. Its 122 cm length helps accentuate the lines of the furniture while visually structuring the space.
When installed vertically, it takes on a different presence. It can complement the height of a stairwell, accent a wall, or be arranged in a cluster in a space with high ceilings. Its cable, which is up to 600 cm long, offers great flexibility in adjusting the Pendant height.
Can the Numbra TY1 serve as the main light source?
Yes, the Numbra TY1 can serve as the main light source in a room, particularly above a dining table or in a space of suitable dimensions. Its built-in 15 W LED emits 700 lumens, with a very warm color temperature of 2400 K.
Its unique feature lies primarily in the way it diffuses light. The oak grain and the Acrylic diffuser create patterns of shadow that soften the light and reduce glare. The light remains present and functional, yet intentionally subtle and nuanced.
Its color rendering index (CRI) of over 90 faithfully reproduces the nuances of materials and objects. The brightness can also be adjusted from 100% to 10% using a compatible system, allowing you to adapt the light to different times of the day.
Should Numbra be installed horizontally or vertically?
The choice depends primarily on the space and the desired effect. When installed horizontally, Numbra highlights a piece of furniture or a functional area and fits naturally above a table, an island, or a Counter.
When installed vertically, it becomes more of an architectural element. This setup is particularly well-suited for an entryway, a stairwell, or a high-ceilinged space. Multiple pendant lights can also be combined to create a graphic rhythm and manipulate the light throughout the entire space.
Can the built-in LED be replaced?
Yes. The LED light source in the Numbra TY1 is built-in but replaceable. A new light source can be purchased from &tradition. This feature allows you to keep the fixture when its LED reaches the end of its lifespan, rather than replacing the entire pendant.
The Numbra TY1 is designed for those who view light as an integral part of interior architecture. Its graphic lines, natural oak finish, and warm lighting lend a unique depth to contemporary spaces. A piece chosen as much for the light it diffuses as for the shadows it creates.
