Numbra TY3 &tradition Cordless Lamp: Bringing Soft Lighting on the Go
With the Numbra TY3 cordless wireless rechargeable lamp, Teruhiro Yanagihara brings the world of Numbra into a compact 25.5 cm-tall design. This rechargeable lamp combines solid oak panels with aluminum fittings and an internal diffuser made of frosted acrylic. A soft light emerges from between the lines of wood, conceived less as a beam than as a presence. Cordless, the Numbra TY3 moves freely from the table to the bedside table or desk and even accompanies you to outdoor gatherings.
When Light Meets Shadow
Numbra is born from a universal element: the straight line. For his first collaboration with &tradition, Teruhiro Yanagihara explores these lines that structure objects, architecture, and cities alike. Here, their repetition becomes a means of shaping the light as much as the object itself.
This exploration echoes Junichirô Tanizaki’s “In Praise of Shadows.” The Japanese designer favors light that is felt rather than lighting that simply seeks to illuminate. The shadows produced when light meets the vertical lines thus play a full part in Numbra’s identity.
Wood as a Light Filter
The boards of varnished solid oak form an openwork shell around the frosted acrylic diffuser. They are paired with moulded aluminium fasteners with a barrel-finished, clear-varnished finish. This interplay of wood, light, and metal gives the small lamp a highly architectural, graphic presence.
When lit, Numbra reveals its lines through contrast and allows light to shine through them. When unlit, it retains its decorative presence. Teruhiro Yanagihara compares the collection to a vase whose beauty remains even when it contains no flowers. This is a way of viewing the light fixture as a true object in space, independent of its function.
Where can you place a cordless lamp like the Numbra TY3?
The Numbra TY3 can be moved between a dining table, a coffee table, a desk, or a bedside table. Its compact size and wireless operation allow it to be placed where an electrical outlet would be inconvenient or simply undesirable.
Thanks to its IP44 rating, it can also be used outdoors in dry weather or in a sheltered outdoor area, such as a covered patio. However, it must be brought inside when it rains and is not designed to remain outdoors indefinitely.

The Numbra TY3 offers up to 10 hours of battery life when fully charged. This allows you to use it for an entire evening without having to recharge it.
A full charge takes about 8 hours. The 200 cm magnetic USB-A cable needed for charging is included with the lamp.
Can you adjust the brightness of the Numbra TY3?
Yes, the lamp offers three brightness levels: 100%, 50%, and 20%. This flexibility makes it easy to adapt the lighting to your needs and the time of day.
At full power, it’s perfect for dinner or reading. The intermediate settings provide a softer, more subdued light, especially in the evening or on a bedside table. Its built-in 3.5 W LED offers a warm color temperature of 2700 K.
Is the Numbra TY3 suitable for outdoor use?
Yes, the Numbra TY3 can be used occasionally outdoors in dry weather or in a sheltered area. Its IP44 rating allows it to be used for dinner on the patio or an evening gathering outdoors.
However, it must be brought inside in case of rain and stored indoors after use. It is therefore not designed to remain outdoors permanently.
