The Nuvola Rossa shelf was designed in 1977 by Vico Magistretti, a leading figure in post-war Italian architecture and design. This wooden shelf, "foldable like a Reclining chair", is an undisputed icon. The intriguing aesthetic of this totem-like shelf is based on a bold Toy of shapes and simplified functionality.
Featuring a Toy of right- and left-handed V-shaped Mountings, the Nuvola Rossa shelf stands out for its airy, dynamic silhouette, devoid of straight lines or side panels. Nuvola Rossa is the result of a reinterpretation of the elements that make up the classic Bookcase, reducing its traditional structural elements. A design icon as well as a genuine construction invention, the Bookcase's folding structure is reduced to a minimum, transforming diagonal braces into load-bearing elements and eliminating the need for side supports. With the emphasis on hinges, the structure, which can be folded, can also be used as a room divider. When closed, Nuvola Rossa resembles a ladder, while in its open position it unfolds like a cleverly folded Indian Tepee.
In this project, at least two concepts typical of the Magistretti method are visible: on the one hand, the furnishing element reproduces, on a different scale, the functioning of an architectural structure and, above all, in this project, it is precisely the structure that dictates the object's final form.
This folding bookcase, with its minimalist, modern lines, can be wall-mounted or used as a partition by freely juxtaposing several units according to the space available.
The Nuvola Rossa Bookcase can be identified thanks to the control of three pieces of information that guarantee its authenticity: the author's signature in the form of a mark, the Cassina "I Maestri" logo, the identification number, present on every piece produced.
