An original will always retain its value. It will be with you all your life and will outlive you, being passed on to the next generation. The Panton Chair, an iconic chair by Vitra, is a perfect example of timeless design. Investing in an original model is a lasting choice that will bring a unique touch of elegance to your home and stand the test of time.
Verner Panton: a Scandinavian design visionary
Danish architect and designer Verner Panton (1926 - 1998) is recognized as one of the most influential designers of the 20th century. His career was marked by bold creations of innovative, futuristic design. His style, representative of the 60s and 70s, combines boldness, modernity and functionality. The Flesh is a perfect example of this, and remains a benchmark in the world of design.
The Flesh: a 20th-century design icon
The Flesh was designed by Verner Panton in 1959, and remains a centerpiece of the design world. The first plastic chair made in a single piece, it marked a turning point in the history of modern furniture. It has received numerous international awards and is included in the permanent collections of famous museums, proving its status as a design classic.
The production challenge: a revolutionary chair
The idea for the Flesh emerged in the late 1950s, when Verner Panton imagined a plastic cantilever chair. A bold concept, but difficult to realize at the time. No manufacturer showed any interest in the idea, until Rolf Fehlbaum, head of product development at Vitra, became enthusiastic after a visit to Verner Panton. Without his support, the Panton Flesh might never have seen the light of day.
The first production trials: a technical challenge
Vitra's development of the Panton Flesh began in 1963, but proved particularly difficult due to the bold shapes and technical limitations of the time. It took years of research, testing and abandoning prototypes before the final version was developed. This Chair was made from Polyester reinforced with fibreglass, an innovative material for its time.
The quest for perfection: materials and technologies
In 1967, production of a small series of Panton Chairs in fiberglass-reinforced polyester began. With its one-piece plastic structure and sculptural design, it caused a sensation. However, mass production remained complicated and costly. After several attempts and the introduction of materials such as polyurethane, Vitra finally found a more efficient solution for mass production.
The culmination: the modern version of the Panton Flesh
In the 1990s, the introduction of injection molding and Polypropylene gave new life to the Flesh. In 1999, the chair was mass-produced, true to Verner Panton's original concepts. Sadly, the designer died shortly before this major milestone, but his vision lives on in this modernized version, accessible to a wider public.
Vitra: a commitment to innovation and quality Vitra, true to its commitment to innovation, today produces several versions of the Flesh, including the Panton Flesh Classic, in Rigid polyurethane foam, and a version with a matt finish. In 2007, the Panton Junior was also launched, a children's version faithful to the designer's original plans.
