Panton Cubes Cat: Verner Panton’s graphic bestiary
With Panton Cubes Cat, the cube becomes a canvas for creativity. Designed by Verner Panton in 1974 and now reissued by Vitra, this kit lets you assemble a cat silhouette yourself using cubic frames and snap-together boards. This two-tone version features two shades of blue that enhance its graphic appeal. Made from Recycled ABS sourced from production scraps, the sculpture measures 54 cm wide by 60 cm high and is only 18 cm deep.
The Cube According to Verner Panton
More than just a static figure, Panton Cubes is based on a genuine construction principle. As early as the mid-1970s, Verner Panton used these cubic units to create various compositions—whether animal-inspired, abstract, or purely graphic. This approach, based on the repetition and combination of forms, is characteristic of his research into transformable systems.
Vitra is now reissuing this concept in collaboration with Verner Panton Design AG. The collection features four figures: a cat, a duck, a flamingo pink, and a giraffe. Each Kit contains the exact number of pieces needed to assemble the corresponding figure.
Assemble, disassemble, reinvent
The assembly process is an integral part of the object’s unique character. The cubic frames are connected by small fasteners and then completed with boards that close off certain sides. No tools are required. The assembly can then be disassembled to return to its original configuration or to create a different composition.
The frames, connectors, and boards are made from post-industrial Recycled ABS sourced from production scraps. This material gives new life to waste while preserving the geometric precision essential to the system designed by Panton.
Do you have to assemble the Panton Cubes Cat yourself?
Yes. The Panton Cubes Cat comes as a kit and must be assembled by the user, without tools. It includes the exact number of cubes needed to recreate the cat model shown in the instructions. But there’s no rule saying you have to stick to that: the pieces can be taken apart and reassembled to create your own designs.
Are Panton Cubes child’s toys?
No. Panton Cubes are designed as decorative objects, not as toys. Due to the size of the pieces and their assembly system, they should not be left within reach of children without supervision.
Where should the Panton Cubes Cat be placed?
Measuring 54 × 18 × 60 cm, the cat can be placed on a Console table, a sideboard, or directly on the floor. Its shallow depth also makes it easy to fit into narrower spaces. On its own, it functions as a graphic sculpture. Paired with the other animals in the collection, it forms a veritable bestiary designed by Verner Panton.
With the Panton Cubes Cat, Verner Panton transforms basic geometry into an almost living presence. Part Sculpture, part modular system, and part collectible, this blue cat brings to any interior the formal freedom and visual energy that make the designer’s world instantly recognizable.
