Panton Cubes Duck: Verner Panton’s graphic duck
With Panton Cubes Duck, Verner Panton transforms a basic shape into a build-it-yourself Sculpture. Designed in 1974 and now reissued by Vitra, this kit lets you assemble a duck silhouette using cubic frames and boards. Its two-tone orange and red color scheme accentuates the interplay of volumes and gives the figure a distinctly graphic presence. Made from Recycled ABS derived from production scraps, the sculpture has a compact size of 48 cm wide, 18 cm deep, and 42 cm tall.
The Cube According to Verner Panton
More than just a static figure, Panton Cubes is based on a genuine principle of construction. As early as the mid-1970s, Verner Panton used these cubic units to create various compositions—whether animal-inspired, abstract, or purely graphic. This approach, based on the repetition and combination of forms, is characteristic of his exploration of transformable systems.
Vitra is now reissuing this concept in collaboration with Verner Panton Design AG. The collection features four silhouettes: a cat, a duck, a flamingo, and a giraffe. The duck is the most compact of this menagerie, standing 42 cm tall. In its two-tone version, orange dominates the composition, while red adds rhythm to certain cubes and highlights the silhouette’s geometry.
Assemble, disassemble, reinvent
The assembly process is integral to the object’s unique character. The cubic frames are connected by small clips, then completed with boards that close off certain sides. No tools are required. Once assembled, the structure can be disassembled to return to its original configuration or to create a personalized composition.
The frames, connectors, and boards are made from post-industrial Recycled ABS, sourced from production scraps. The material preserves the clean lines and geometric precision that define the system conceived by Panton.
Do you have to assemble the Panton Cubes Duck yourself?
Yes. The Panton Cubes Duck comes as a do-it-yourself kit that requires no tools. It contains the number of cubes needed to fully assemble the duck. Its design allows you to take the pieces apart and reassemble them to explore other configurations.
Are Panton Cubes child’s toys?
No. Panton Cubes are decorative objects, not toys. Vitra specifies that they should not be left within reach of children without supervision. They are intended for use in a home, office, display case, or reception area.
Where should the Panton Cubes Duck be placed?
Measuring 48 × 18 × 42 cm, the duck fits easily on a console table, a sideboard, a deep shelf, or a low cabinet. Its compact size also allows it to be incorporated into smaller spaces. On its own, it functions as a graphic sculpture. Paired with the cat, flamingo, or giraffe from the collection, it becomes part of a veritable bestiary designed by Verner Panton.
With the Panton Cubes Duck, Verner Panton transforms the cube into a canvas for expression. Its deliberately abstract silhouette and the contrast between orange and red add a graphic accent to any interior, straddling the line between decorative sculpture, a modular system, and a collector’s item.
