With Panton Cubes Duck, Verner Panton transforms the cube into a build-it-yourself Sculpture. Designed in 1974 and now reissued by Vitra, this kit allows you to assemble a duck silhouette using cubic frames and boards. In this chrome version, the reflective surfaces capture light and their surroundings, causing the perception of volume to vary depending on the viewing angle. Made from Recycled ABS sourced from production scraps, the Sculpture measures 48 cm wide, 18 cm deep, and 42 cm tall.

The Cube According to Verner Panton

More than just a static figure, Panton Cubes is based on a construction principle. Beginning in the mid-1970s, Verner Panton used cubic units to assemble, disassemble, and reassemble various figures—whether animals, abstract shapes, or purely graphic forms. This combinatorial logic places the cube at the heart of the creative process.

Vitra is now reissuing the concept in collaboration with Verner Panton Design AG. The collection features four figures—the cat, the duck, the flamingo, and the giraffe—available in two-tone or Chromed finishes. At 42 cm tall, the duck is the most compact of the collection. In this mirror-chrome finish, its reflective surfaces alter the appearance of its silhouette depending on the light and viewing angle.

To assemble, disassemble, and reinvent

Assembly is an integral part of the experience. The cubic frames are connected by small clips, then covered with boards that close off certain sides. No tools are required. The structure can be disassembled just as easily, allowing you to start from scratch and create a composition different from the one suggested in the instructions.

The frames, connectors, and boards are made from post-industrial Recycled ABS sourced from production scraps. This material preserves the precision of the lines and the geometric clarity essential to the system designed by Panton.

Do you have to assemble the Panton Cubes Duck yourself?

Yes. The Panton Cubes Duck comes as a DIY kit that requires no tools. It includes the exact number of cubes needed to fully assemble the duck. Since the various components can be taken apart, this design also allows you to go beyond the suggested model and experiment with your own arrangements.

Are Panton Cubes child’s toys?

No. Panton Cubes are designed as decorative objects, not as toys. Vitra specifies that they should not be left within children’s reach without supervision. The collection is therefore intended for decoration of a home, an office, a store window, or a reception area.

Where should you place the Chromed Panton Cubes Duck?

Measuring 48 × 18 × 42 cm, the duck can be placed on a Console table, a sideboard, a mantelpiece, or a low cabinet. Its depth of just 18 cm makes it easy to fit into a narrow space.
