Chromed Panton Cubes Giraffe: a designer piece by Verner Panton
With the Panton Cubes Giraffe (Chromed), you’re bringing a true designer piece into your home. Designed in 1974 by Verner Panton, a leading figure in 20th-century design, this cube system—now reissued by Vitra —reflects his penchant for modular forms, graphic compositions, and objects capable of transforming a space. The giraffe silhouette, constructed from cubic frames and snap-on boards, takes on an almost sculptural quality here thanks to its mirror-like Chromed finish. Made from Recycled ABS derived from production scraps, it measures 54 cm wide, 18 cm deep, and 90 cm tall.
Verner Panton: The Cube as His Signature
Verner Panton left his mark on the history of design with a radical approach to form, color, and space. The Panton Cubes are fully in line with this experimental approach. Conceived in 1974, the system is based on a basic geometric shape—the cube—which the designer repeats and combines to create a multitude of compositions. This modular logic echoes his research into repetitive and combinatorial forms.
More than just a decorative object, Panton Cubes thus embodies a creative principle characteristic of the Danish designer. The cubes become a building blocks from which animal silhouettes, abstract figures, or entirely free-form compositions are constructed. Vitra is now reviving this creation in collaboration with Verner Panton Design AG.
A collectible Vitra reissue
The collection features four designs: the cat, the duck, the flamingo, and the giraffe. Each model is available in a two-tone or Chromed version. At 90 cm tall, the Panton Cubes Giraffe is the tallest of the four silhouettes. Its long neck and slender proportions fully showcase the geometric principle conceived by Panton.
In this chromed version, the reflective surfaces alter the perception of the Sculpture depending on the light, the viewing angle, and the surrounding colors. The geometry appears at times more prominent and at other times blends into its surroundings. This particularly expressive finish reinforces the status of this reissue as a sculptural piece.
To assemble, disassemble, and reinvent
The appeal of the Panton Cubes also lies in their construction principle. The piece does not arrive as a finished Sculpture: it takes shape in the hands of its owner. The cubic frames are connected to one another by small fasteners, then completed with boards that close off certain sides. Assembly is done entirely without tools.
The structure can then be disassembled and reassembled. This makes it possible to follow the model envisioned by Verner Panton to build the giraffe or to repurpose the various units to experiment with your own assemblies. This freedom is an integral part of the original concept and transforms the designer object into a true creative system.
The frames, connectors, and boards are made from post-industrial Recycled ABS sourced from production scraps. The material preserves the precision of the lines and the sharpness of the volumes essential to this cube-based architecture.
Do you have to assemble the Panton Cubes Giraffe yourself?
Yes. The Panton Cubes Giraffe comes as a Kit and must be assembled by the owner without any tools. It includes the exact number of cubes needed to fully construct the giraffe. The assembly process is part of the experience of this creation by Verner Panton: rather than simply displaying the object, you directly discover the construction principle envisioned by the designer.
Are Panton Cubes child’s toys?
No. Despite their playful assembly process, Panton Cubes are decorative objects, not toys. Vitra specifies that they should not be left within reach of children without supervision. They are designed as decorative pieces to be displayed in a home, office, storefront, or reception area.
Where should you place a designer piece like the Panton Cubes Giraffe?
Standing 90 cm tall and only 18 cm deep, the Panton Cubes Giraffe deserves a spot where its silhouette can be fully appreciated. Placed directly on the floor, the giraffe adds life to a corner of a room, an entryway, a living room, or a reception area while taking up minimal floor space.
Its chromed finish is particularly well-suited to a contemporary or minimalist interior. Against a neutral background, its mirror-like surfaces reflect the colors, shapes, and movements around it. Paired with the other animals in the collection, the giraffe also allows you to create a true graphic menagerie inspired by the world of Verner Panton.
With the chromed Panton Cubes Giraffe, you’re choosing both a decorative sculpture and a design icon. This reissue brings a creation by Verner Panton—whose visual language has left a lasting mark on the history of design—into your home. Its spectacular silhouette, radical geometry, and shifting reflections make it an instantly recognizable piece with character, designed to be admired as much as it is collected.
