A historic masterpiece by Charles & Ray Eames
Charles & Ray Eames are among the leading figures of modern design. Their research extends far beyond furniture: films, photographs, exhibitions... their work is multidisciplinary, demanding and joyful. In the 1940s, the couple developed a revolutionary technique for molding Plywood into three-dimensional volumes. The Eames Elephant was born in 1945, as a playful sculpture designed for children. But its complex curves pushed back the technical limits of the time: only one prototype was ever produced, given to Charles's daughter Lucia, then loaned to MoMA in New York for an exhibition in 1946.
A technical feat that became a design icon
Composed of two curved plywood shells, the Eames Elephant bears witness to the duo's formal genius. Its gentle look, oversized ears and generous curvature: every detail reflects the Eames' desire to make design accessible, tactile and emotional. Vitra, the only publisher authorized to produce their creations in Europe, is now reissuing this exceptional piece in a faithful version, in water-based varnished Plywood, emphasizing the nobility of the material.
A design object with universal appeal
At the crossroads of toy, sculpture and decorative object, the Eames Elephant appeals to enlightened enthusiasts and children alike. Whether in a contemporary living room, an architect's bedroom or a Toy area, it is a graphic and endearing design totem. It blends elegantly with organic, minimalist or japanese trends.
The Eames Elephant in Plywood perpetuates the legacy of a mythical couple, while adding a touch of irony, tenderness and poetry to our interiors. An endearing work to pass on, between art and design.
