Created in the late 1920s by Le Corbusier, his cousin Pierre Jeanneret and Charlotte Perriand, the "LC" (as in Le Corbusier) chairs are icons in the history of design.
In 1928, the trio imagined seats as ergonomic as they were innovative to equip the Church and La Roche villas. This collection includes the LC1 armchair with tilting backrest, the LC2 and LC3, then known as "Grand Confort", and the LC4 Reclining chair, produced exclusively by Cassina from 1969 onwards.
Presented in 1929 at the Salon d'Automne in Paris, this avant-garde furniture marked a turning point in design: the three designers were the first to combine Steel and Leather in furniture-making. What's more, the furniture's minimalist structure reflected an unprecedented simplicity that contrasted with the highly decorative furniture of the period. These chairs shook up the world of design in terms of inspiration, form and materials.
The ''LC1'' tilt-back armchair is inspired by the colonial chair used by British officers in the 19th century. It features a tubular steel frame on which a supple leather upholstery is suspended. The armrests are made of Leather straps.
The result of an in-depth study of body posture, the LC1 armchair is surprisingly comfortable: its minimalist lines, based on elementary geometry, paradoxically offer extreme comfort! In fact, ingenious details such as the reclining backrest and the metal springs under the seat and on the backrest contribute to its comfort.
Every element of the LC1 Armchair is meticulously crafted by experienced artisans, embodying the excellence of Italian craftsmanship. High-quality materials, such as top-quality Leather, give this piece of furniture unrivalled durability and beauty. Cassina's perfectionist craftsmanship contributes to the myth of this armchair, which will accompany the lives of many generations.
Often imitated and copied, but never equalled, Cassina's original Le Corbusier armchairs can be identified thanks to the control of three pieces of information that guarantee their authenticity: the author's signature in the form of a marking, the Cassina logo ''I Maestri'', the identification number, present on every piece produced.
Note on hair-spotted Calf leather: this quality of leather of bovine origin is called foal-style leather because of the particular spots that characterize it. The leather has a thin layer of hair and is untreated, giving it a natural and absolutely unique appearance: the size of the colored areas varies from dress to dress, making each piece unique.
