La Quattro Wall light: The Architecture of the Milan Metro Reimagined
With La Quattro, the Piovenefabi architecture studio continues the work it began with the Metro Lamps collection. Founded by Ambra Fabi and Giovanni Piovene and based between Milan and Brussels, the studio created an installation dedicated to the Milan Metro for the 2017 Chicago Architecture Biennial. The project takes as its starting point one of the network’s visual hallmarks: its famous tubular handrail. valerie_objects then transforms this architectural research into a collection of lighting fixtures designed for the home.
Measuring 80 cm high and 43 cm deep, La Quattro interprets this idea as a wall light with a particularly expressive design. Its steel structure traces a series of curves before ending with an exposed light source. Available in green, red, white, or yellow, it asserts color as a graphic element in its own right. Its large dimensions give it a strong sculptural presence and allow it to adorn the wall in a spectacular way.
A line of light drawn in space
The strength of La Quattro lies in the continuity of its steel tube. The form appears to have been drawn directly on the wall and then brought to life in three dimensions. The curves break with the traditional geometry of a wall light and give the fixture an almost sign-like appearance.
This approach directly reflects Piovenefabi’s architectural vision. The studio takes a utilitarian element from public space and detaches it from its original function to transform it into a sculptural domestic object. The reference to the subway remains recognizable, but the change in scale and context completely transforms how it is perceived.
A sculptural presence that transforms the wall
At 80 cm tall, La Quattro is anything but discreet. Its generous size allows it to visually dominate the wall like a true graphic composition. More than just a light source, it becomes a decorative element in its own right, capable of defining a section of wall and instantly adding character to the room.
Its continuous line and generous curves stand out even more once the lamp is turned on. The light then highlights its design and accentuates its sculptural character.
Why choose a wall light with a plug?
The Quattro plugs directly into a wall outlet thanks to its 200-cm cable. This setup allows you to install a wall light without relying on a built-in electrical outlet. The switch on the cable also makes it easy to use on a daily basis.
It is therefore a particularly attractive solution for adding a light source to an existing interior without making major changes to the electrical wiring.
What kind of lighting does the Quattro wall light provide?
The Quattro uses a 4-watt E27 bulb, which is included with the fixture. The light source is positioned directly at the end of the structure, which enhances the fixture’s visual appeal and creates a focused spot of light on the wall.
It is therefore particularly well-suited as supplementary and decorative lighting rather than as the sole light source in a large room.
Where should you install the La Quattro wall light?
With its dimensions of H 80 x D 43 cm, the Quattro deserves a spot where its silhouette can be fully showcased. It can adorn a large section of wall in a living room, accent an entryway, line a hallway, or create a focal point in a professional space. Its plug-in connection offers greater freedom in choosing its location.
La Quattro thus transforms an element drawn from public architecture into a graphic element for the home. Spectacular in its dimensions, sculptural in its lines, and expressive in its color, it turns the wall into a true canvas for composition.
