La Quattro Wall light: The Architecture of the Milan Metro Reinvented
With La Quattro, the Piovenefabi architecture studio continues its work on the Metro Lamps collection. Founded by Ambra Fabi and Giovanni Piovene and based in Milan and Brussels, the studio created an installation dedicated to the Milan Metro for the 2017 Chicago Architecture Biennial. The project takes as its starting point one of the network’s visual hallmarks: its famous tubular handrail. valerie_objects then transforms this architectural exploration into a collection of lighting fixtures designed for the home.
Measuring 80 cm high and 43 cm deep, La Quattro embodies this concept in a wall light with a particularly expressive design. Its steel structure traces a series of curves before ending in an exposed light source. Available in Green, Red, White, or Yellow, it asserts color as a graphic element in its own right. Its large dimensions give it a strong sculptural presence and allow it to adorn the wall in a spectacular way.
A line of light drawn in space
The strength of La Quattro lies in the continuity of its steel tube. The form appears to have been drawn directly on the wall and then brought to life in three dimensions. The curves break with the traditional geometry of a wall light and give the fixture an almost sign-like appearance.
This approach directly reflects Piovenefabi’s architectural vision. The studio takes a utilitarian element from public space and detaches it from its original function to transform it into a sculptural domestic object. The reference to the subway remains recognizable, but the change in scale and context completely transforms how it is perceived.

At 80 cm tall, La Quattro is anything but discreet. Its generous size allows it to visually dominate the wall like a true graphic composition. More than just a light source, it becomes a decorative element in its own right, capable of defining a section of wall and instantly adding character to the room.
Its continuous line and generous curves take on even greater depth once the lamp is turned on. The light then highlights its design and accentuates its sculptural character.
