In 1951, on the shores of the Azure Riviera, Le Corbusier built "Le Cabanon". This modest Wood construction is the absolute archetype of essential living, based on an ergonomic, functionalist approach. Everything fits into 15 m²: the furniture is reduced to a bed, a table, a few storages, a washbasin and a toilet. The Den represents the culmination of research into the notion of the minimum cell, which lies at the heart of the preoccupations of twentieth-century modern architects, and revives the myth of the primitive Den.
Le Corbusier designed the first version of the LC14 Stool in 1952 to furnish "Le Cabanon". Designed in the shape of a box according to the objet trouvé principle, LC14 was inspired by a case of Whisky abandoned on the beach. The colorful variant was designed for the children's bedrooms of the Unité d'habitation de Nantes Rezé. This piece of furniture features new details compared to the variants already included in the LC14 collection. This model, developed after the first project for the two-dimensional Cabanon Stool in 1952, anticipates the Brazilian Stool for its three-dimensional composition, while differentiating itself from the latter for greater simplicity in the joints. The other two versions are characterized by dovetail joints between the faces, while this piece features a simplified and minimal union of orthogonal boards. The different faces, in open-pore lacquered oak, feature two colors from the Le Corbusier palette: Blue and Brown. Handles are simplified, with rectangular rather than rounded openings.
Perfectly stable, LC14 can be placed either horizontally or vertically. It can be used as a seat or as a Coffee table. Lightweight, this Mobile is easy to move and handle thanks to its multiple holes.
This piece of furniture has been thought through down to the smallest detail. This Spartan, yet elegant, piece of seating is crafted with refined artisanal techniques that highlight Cassina's skill in working with wood.
Often imitated and copied, but never equalled, Cassina's original Le Corbusier furniture can be identified thanks to the control of three pieces of information that guarantee its authenticity: the author's signature in the form of a marking, the Cassina logo ''I Maestri'', the identification number, present on every piece produced.
