Physix's construction is based on the essential idea of creating a continuous seat shell, consisting of a Fishnet fabric Board stretched between two side bars.
High-quality, flexible Plastic is used to achieve the desired mobility. The textile cover is stretched between two plastic mountings whose profile has been designed so that they deform exactly according to the user's desired movement. And because, without resistance, this deformation would be uncontrolled, two antler-shaped aluminum stirrups transmit the forces of movement from the side uprights to coil springs located under the seat: this guarantees controlled, weight-adjustable movement.
The sturdy Textile cover is made from a custom-made multi-wire knit, whose translucency underlines Physix's visual lightness. The Textile is highly resistant yet flexible enough to support dynamic three-dimensional movements.
Using innovative production techniques and materials, Alberto Meda combines three elements in the service of innovative dynamic seating: a flexible structure, a soft covering and a stabilizing mechanism. These three features form an ingenious construction that explores new possibilities for dynamic seating through the interaction of flexible and rigid elements.
Physix is the pioneer of an almost century-old development of seating in which the seat and backrest form a continuum. In 1927, with the MR 20/3 cantilever chair, Mies van der Rohe had reached the first peak of this evolution: later came seats with shells in Molded plywood, Sheet metal or Plastic, created by designers such as Rietveld, Aalto and Coray. With Physix, Alberto Meda revitalizes the tried-and-tested Textile-covered seat shell without losing the simplicity and directness of his designs.
Physix is a swivel chair with a 5-star base and casters. It features a continuous tilting mechanism that adapts to the user's weight, with synchronized movement, individual adjustment of backrest resistance and locking in the upright position. The seat height is infinitely adjustable via gas springs.
