Description
Design icons go green... Since January 2024, the shells of Vitra's famous Eames Plastic Chairs have been made from 100% recyclable, post-consumer recycled plastic. The family of chairs is now called Eames Plastic Chair RE. The recycled materials used come from Kitchen cupboard waste, in particular used packaging collected as part of the "Gelber Sack" (Yellow Bags) waste collection program in Germany. Due to the composition of the recycled materials, the Shells feature tiny dots of pigment.
Charles & Ray Eames are among the most important design personalities of the 20th century. The first mass-produced plastic chairs, the Shell Chairs by Charles & Ray Eames are among the most important creations in furniture history.
The idea of creating a one-piece molded seat shell adapted to the human anatomy preoccupied the design duo for many years. After experiments with plywood and sheet metal failed to produce satisfactory results in the 1940s, they discovered Glass fibre reinforced polyester resin during their search for alternative materials. This material, totally unknown to the furniture industry at the time, enabled the development of molded shells, which were then perfected right up to mass production. This one-piece, organic shell proved an admired innovation at a time when most chairs consisted of a seat and backrest. Fibreglass offered the added benefit of a pleasant feel and a perfectly molded shell for extraordinary comfort.
After their initial presentation at the Museum of Modern Art's "Low Cost Furniture Design" competition in 1948, the Plastic Armchair and Plastic Side Chair were launched on the market in 1950 as the first mass-produced plastic chairs. With the launch of this revolutionary creation, Charles & Ray Eames introduced a new furniture typology that has since spread throughout the world: the multifunctional chair whose shell can be combined with a wide variety of different Legs. As early as 1950, Charles & Ray Eames presented a whole series of different Legs of remarkable design.
The DAR (Dining Height Armchair Rod Base) is distinguished by the complex construction of its steel wire "Eiffel Tower" base. This filigree structure boasts an unrivalled combination of formal lightness and constructive stability. Despite its compact dimensions, this Armchair offers pleasant comfort even for tall users. Its iconic shape is instantly recognizable.
Today, Vitra manufactures Charles & Ray Eames' DAR armchairs in two different shells: the Eames Plastic Armchairs RE feature a recycled plastic shell, while the Eames Fiberglass Armchairs feature a fiberglass-reinforced polyester resin shell, just like the first models.
Due to the high quality of Vitra's originals, the manufacturer offers a 10-year warranty (register your product on the dedicated website to benefit from the extended warranty).
