Louis Poulsen lighting: mid-century design from Denmark

The mid-century style is just as popular today as at the time of its creation. Originating from the Unites States in the 1950s, the reduced and organic, yet geometric designs have captivated the design world. Louis Poulsen lights are part of the focused, modern living style which developed in Denmark. With their simple shapes, high-quality materials and clever construction, the design classics were, and continue to be, easy to combine and a highlight in any home.

PH lighting: the Louis Poulsen lamps by Poul Henningsen

Many of the Louis Poulsen lighting classics stem from the groundbreaking designs of Poul Henningsen. The lifelong, fruitful design partnership between the designer and Louis Poulsen began in 1924 and lasted until his death in 1967. This period resulted in the characteristic PH lamps, whose special characteristic is the innovative directed lighting. Guided by multiple lamp shades, the light illuminates the table or a whole room without any glare. Discover the classics:

  1. PH 5: Developed in 1958. The light falls over three shades both downwards and to the side. The name was chosen to reflect the main shade, with its diameter of 50 cm.
  2. PH Artichoke: The construction of the lamp resembles an artichoke. 72 leaves are attached at an angle in 12 rows. As a result, the lamp emits completely symmetrical light.
  3. PH Snowball: The reflective three-shade system largely guides the light downwards. Designed in 1958, the lamp was a huge success when it was launched again in 1983.

PH lighting by Louis Poulsen captivates with its interplay between light structures, shade, glare and colour. Be it in the living room, bedroom, kitchen or hallway, the lights emit atmospheric lighting.

The AJ collection: Arne Jacobsen for Louis Poulsen

In 1960, the Danish architect and designer Arne Jacobsen designed the AJ lights for the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen. The collection includes wall lights, floor lamps, table lamps and pendant lights, which cast the light in a certain direction. Thanks to the swivel-mounted lamp heads, you can perfectly adjust the direction of the light to your desk or your reading chair. The simple, timeless design of the lighting works in any interior style – be it minimalism, retro chic or modernism. To mark the 50th anniversary of the series, Louis Poulsen surprised the design world with the release of the lamps in five new colours.
